And Oskar, the 12-year-old protagonist of this brilliant Swedish adaptation of John Lindqvist's celebrated novel, does just that with Eli, his new neighbor and vampire trapped in the body of an 11-year-old girl. No breaking and entering here, but bring the monster inside. Instead of Eli terrifying the intimidated Oskar, she defeats her enemies with disturbingly creative methods. As Eli and Oskar build trust in each other, one moment her heart is softened by her relationship and the next she is ripped from his chest and doused with hydrochloric acid.

Beautifully shot and consistently terrifying, this retelling of old fairy tales is loaded with great performances, hilarious jabs, and unexpected surprises of the nastiest kind.

Selah and her "sisters" are devoted followers of this man, unaware of the evil that lurks within his belief system and the society she has created. Her dreams are plagued by violent visions, which she begins to embrace rather than avoid. Director Malgorzata Szumowska and cinematographer Michal Englert wrap up her story in stunningly beautiful landscapes, and Cassidy calls her one of the most adventurous young actresses around.
